The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested a Cuban who is facing deportation and who had several criminal convictions, after an operation carried out last week in South Florida.
On January 27 and 28, ICE officers and agents conducted immigration enforcement actions in Palm Beach County, in collaboration with the United States Border Patrol. According to a statement from the government agency, they detained 32 undocumented individuals who had been convicted of criminal offenses.
The detainees are originally from Nicaragua, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Haiti, Guatemala and Cuba.
Among the migrants is a 24-year-old Cuban man, whose identity remains anonymous, who has a criminal record, including fraud, theft, missing court dates and violating parole. According to the ICE statement, the individual is in custody and awaits deportation from the country.
The 32 detained immigrants face a variety of charges, including drug possession, illegal reentry, obstructing law enforcement, robbery, violating parole conditions, fraudulent use of credit cards, theft, engaging in prostitution, drunk driving and having stolen property in their possession.
According to ICE, “All illegal aliens apprehended during this operation will be detained pending removal from the United States or a hearing before an immigration judge.”
Among those arrested is a 30-year-old Venezuelan man with a history of resisting arrest, drug possession, and theft. Additionally, a 25-year-old Guatemalan man is also being held on charges including illegal reentry into the country, cocaine possession, and drunk driving. Both individuals are currently awaiting deportation.
Police arrested a 44-year-old Haitian woman on charges of several crimes, including assault, drug possession, prostitution and possession of narcotics paraphernalia. According to the official announcement, she will have to appear before an immigration judge for a deportation hearing.
The recent operations in Palm Beach County are the result of new strategies adopted by the administration of President Donald Trump after his reinstatement, aimed at combating illegal immigration and safeguarding the nation's borders and its people.
According to social media platform X, ICE has detained more than 8.000 immigrants since the administration began.
Tom Homan, Trump's appointee to oversee immigration and border security issues, said deportations of immigrants to the Guantanamo Naval Base in Cuba will begin within 30 days.
