President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly set to pick Cuban-American Senator Marco Rubio for secretary of state, a move that would make the Cuban-American lawmaker the first Latino to hold the country's top diplomatic post.

The New York Times first reported Rubio's expected appointment on Monday.

The 53-year-old Florida Republican has consistently sounded the alarm about the dangers posed to the nation by foreign rivals such as China and Iran.

Since 2011, Rubio, whose parents fled Cuba, has been a senator from Florida. He serves as vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and also serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

His stance on dictatorships like Cuba and Venezuela makes Cuban exiles dream of the long-awaited freedom for Cubans on the island.
