Donald Trump on Tuesday faced charges in a Justice Department investigation centered on his attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
The charges against Trump include conspiring to deceive the U.S. government and engaging in actions to intimidate potential witnesses.
The indictment, which marks his third brush with criminal charges as he runs for president in 2024, stems from a sprawling federal investigation into alleged plots by Trump and his associates to undermine the peaceful transition of authority and an effort to retain power following his defeat at the hands of Joe Biden.
Trump is scheduled to appear in court Thursday before U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan.
Amid Trump's dominance in the Republican race for the party's presidential nomination, this new criminal case comes into play, adding to the two other existing ones.
