After no winning ticket was selected on Friday, the Mega Millions jackpot soared to about $740 million, making it the eighth-largest jackpot in lottery history.
A lucky player facing odds of one in 302 million could end up with less than a third of that total because of mandatory tax deductions.
The next Mega Millions drawing will be held Tuesday night. The next Powerball drawing is scheduled for Saturday night, with a jackpot of $45 million. This total includes an option for a lump sum payment of $21 million, which would be reduced to $15,9 million due to a required 24% tax deduction, or to $13,2 million if the federal marginal tax rate is raised to 37%.
This jackpot ranks as the eighth largest in Mega Millions history.
Among the seven largest prizes, six surpassed the $1 billion mark, with one reaching $1,1 billion in March. Additionally, an $810 million prize was awarded in September during the most recent winning drawing, the seventh largest in Mega Millions history.
