Cuban journalist Mario J. Pentón speaks about the end of his contract with Radio and TV Martí and the station's future.

Mario J. Pentón, renowned journalist for Martí Noticias, shared a moving message about his recent departure from the station and its future. In a context where press freedom is paramount, his message resonates strongly with Cubans and advocates for freedom of expression.

Pentón began his speech by recalling his arrival at Martí Noticias, a media outlet that has been a beacon of hope for many Cubans in exile and on the island. He emphasized that the station has been a "thorn in the side" of the Cuban regime, a symbol of resistance against the censorship that has prevailed for decades.

Recently, their contract with Martí Noticias ended, and sadly, the station's voice was also silenced, fulfilling one of the Cuban regime's longest-standing demands. This situation not only affects the journalists involved, but also represents a severe blow to the Cuban community, which relies on reliable sources of information.

Martí's Mission News

The creation of Martí Noticias was a dream of the illustrious Cuban Jorge Mas Canosa, who understood that the fight for freedom and democracy in Cuba transcends political and partisan boundaries. According to Pentón, Martí Noticias has been a platform that has managed to connect Cubans on and off the island, providing a space for them to share their stories and experiences.

During his time at the station, Pentón and his team worked hard to modernize the language and approach to communication, achieving more than 130 million views on social media in less than a year. These numbers demonstrate Cubans' need and desire for access to free and objective information, dismantling the regime's false narrative that no one listens to Martí Noticias.

Stories of Courage and Resilience

Martí Noticias has witnessed pivotal moments in Cuba's recent history. For example, it was the first outlet to report on the arrest of Economy Minister Alejandro Gil and his family, as well as the rescue of Cubans trapped in Haiti. Amid natural disasters, such as Hurricane Oscar, the station remained active, providing vital information and saving lives while other media outlets remained silent.

In addition, the serious energy and health crises affecting the island were addressed, exposing the ineptitude of a regime sustained through repression and fear. This work has been essential in highlighting the injustices and challenges facing the Cuban people.

The Future of Broadcasting and Journalism in Cuba

Pentón also reflected on the need for the United States to continue supporting media outlets like Martí Noticias, arguing that the station's mission is more vital than ever in a context where censorship and repression are on the rise. Despite the budget cuts, he emphasized that the money allocated to the station is not an expense, but rather an investment in freedom of information.

The situation in Cuba is critical, and the current regime is sustained by fear and coercion. In this context, the existence of independent media and the dissemination of accurate information become essential tools for the defense of human rights and the promotion of democracy.

Pentón concluded his message by thanking his followers and reaffirming his commitment to truth and freedom, assuring them that, although he is no longer part of the Martí Noticias team, he will continue to be an ally of the Cuban cause. His final message was clear: "This is it until the end, and this fight continues."

The voice of Mario J. Pentón and Martí Noticias continues to resonate at a time when press freedom is more crucial than ever. In a world where information is power, the fight for truth in Cuba remains a battle that deserves to be heard and supported.

It's good that they shut down that TV and Radio Marti. That was a den of check-eating that we paid for, just like giving money to those lying dissidents in collusion with the Cuban government, like in a tyranny of murderers. Allow dissidents. I don't believe in any of them.
