American billionaire Elon Musk wants to build tunnels in Miami to solve the traffic problem

Tesla founder Elon Musk announced on Twitter yesterday that his Boring Company would be interested in building tunnels under Miami to eliminate traffic and pollution.

The tweet was in response to Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who had invited him to visit city hall. The Miami tunnels would become an example for the world, Musk wrote.

The solution would "solve traffic" and reduce pollution from cars stuck in congestion.

Musk also said he had already spoken to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis last week about building the tunnels. If the governor and mayor want it done, โ€œweโ€™ll do it,โ€ he said.

Miami has had recent success in building tunnels at low cost, but Musk could potentially scale back even further, according to experts.

Studies had originally estimated that PortMiami's 4.200-foot twin-tunnel project would cost $3.1 billion, but the project was completed in 2014 for about $1 billion.

An FDOT study claimed the cost of the highway subway would have been more than $1.3 billion more than the bridge, bringing the cost to $2.1 billion instead of $800 million.

Local officials have also failed to take action on a tunnel to replace the Brickell Avenue drawbridge. The bridge is the biggest traffic snag in downtown Miami as it is constantly raised for maritime traffic.

Government estimates have pegged the cost of the Brickell tunnel at $1.1 billion to $1.7 billion.

However, Musk appears to have much bigger plans for Miami, with the possibility of a network of tunnels across the city to eliminate traffic.

The city of Miami was recently named the third most congested city in the United States.
