Cuban child Damir Ortiz remains in critical condition. He was transferred to the United States by air ambulance from Cuba on March 12th, thanks to a humanitarian visa, to be treated at Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami, where he is currently hospitalized.
In an interview with Telemundo 51, Eliannis Ramírez, his mother, stated that her son received inadequate medical care on the island, which led to a deterioration in his health.
The mother revealed that her son was diagnosed in Cuba with Burkitt's leukemia, a form of blood cancer that can affect the brain and spinal cord.
Doctors in the United States conducted tests and ruled out the possibility of the disease. "He's negative for Burkitt's leukemia," said the 10-year-old's mother, pointing out that the diagnosis made in Cuba was erroneous.
"They performed lumbar punctures on him twice, both diagnostic and therapeutic. They removed cerebrospinal fluid and injected chemotherapy into his spine," the boy's mother said of the treatments her son received before moving to Miami, adding, "They never told me why the boy couldn't see."
"He's paraplegic; he can feel from the waist up. He doesn't feel anything; his sphincter is relaxed, he defecates, and they had to catheterize him," said his mother.
Ramírez blamed the Cuban health system, claiming that doctors in Cuba abandoned her son and failed to provide him with any viable treatment options.
Ramírez blamed the Cuban healthcare system, stating that Cuban doctors abandoned her son and offered him no viable treatment options. "They gave up on Damir and left him for dead. It all belongs to the same system, the same bad government," she said.
This Monday, activist Idelisa Diasniurka Salcedo Verdecia denounced that the chemotherapy administered to Damir Ortiz in Cuba was not only incorrect but also greatly deteriorated his condition.
“My heart was never wrong,” he said on his Facebook profile, mentioning that he had warned several times that the treatment was not appropriate.
Salcedo, who played a crucial role in facilitating Damir's journey to the United States, emphasized that Damir is currently undergoing a gradual and complex recovery phase due to the circumstances surrounding his arrival.
It has also been revealed that the child has not been diagnosed with leukemia, contrary to what was determined by the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery in Havana last February.
