Two people have lost their lives in a shooting at a luxury high-rise in Hallandale Beach. The shooting sparked fear and uncertainty among residents of the imposing building.
Police in the city released the sound of the ShotSpotter technology that allowed them to learn of the criminal act in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Shortly after midnight, several people called 911 from one of The Beach Club buildings near State Road A1A and Hallandale Beach Boulevard.
A dispatcher can be heard over the Broadcastify police radio scanner saying: โThirty-threeโฆ six or seven shots just went off. You see two people on the ground.โ
A resident on the 45th floor of one of The Beach Club buildings told police that he could see two lifeless individuals on a balcony.
โShots were heard in unit number 4508. I am informing you that both individuals are on the balcony. There should be a Hispanic female face up and a male face down on the balcony,โ an operator can be heard saying again through the aforementioned scanner.
Hallandale Beach police officers immediately responded to the scene, where they found a man and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds on a balcony on the 45th floor.
According to information provided by the police, both subjects died at that location and it appears that the shooting qualifies as a double homicide.
Images captured by 7Skyforce show a large amount of blood on the balcony floor and some openings in the sliding glass door that were presumably caused by the collision of the bullets.
The light emitted by some flashlights was also seen coming from one of the balconies while the detectives remained in the vicinity of the building.
Authorities ordered residents to leave their apartments to ensure investigators could search the area and collect evidence in an optimal manner.
One of the neighbors, named Eric, said: โI tried to get home. I canโt get in. It looks like something crazy happened here. Iโm not even sure what it is exactly. Itโs pretty crazy. Iโve never seen anything like it. Iโve lived here since I was a little kid. Itโs wild.โ
Another resident said: โVery tragic. I donโt know who the people are. Iโm sure Iโll hear more. Iโd be very surprised if it was someone coming in from outside, because the building is very secure.โ
Police have clarified that this was an isolated incident of violence and that residents are not in danger.
According to detectives, the fatal incident is classified as a homicide. The investigation is still active and as of yesterday afternoon, authorities had not revealed the identity of the victims.
The Beach Club Two management company, for its part, stressed that this is an extremely regrettable event involving the loss of human lives and that it is helping the police to determine the causes and circumstances of this tragedy.
