A hailstorm struck residents of Lehigh Acres, southwest Florida, on Saturday, May 24.The unusual phenomenon has left images circulating on social media, in which frozen stones the size of ping pong balls can be seen.
According to meteorologist Matt Devitt, who shared images of the hail on Facebook, it was one of the largest hailstorms of the season in that part of the state.
Meanwhile, Mike's Weather Page on the aforementioned social network reported that there could be other hailstorms this Sunday, particularly if severe storms occur later in the day.
Hail was also reported in Pembroke Pines on Friday afternoon, according to images posted by Only in Dade on Instagram.
"Hurricane season hasn't even started yet and the weather looks like this. We're screwed," said one user after seeing the hailstorm.
"I've lived in Pembroke Pines for 47 years and I've never seen so much ice fall so violently, and there was so much rotation, I wonder if it was a tornado," another netizen commented.
"South Florida has seen a lot of ice lately," someone else noted.
