Yesterday, Florida's governor made an announcement that will surely be a welcome development for many soccer fans. Ron DeSantis' scoop was that the state government would provide a contribution of $8 million to build what will be Inter Miami CF's new soccer stadium, Miami Freedom Park.
At the press conference where the announcement was made, DeSantis was accompanied by the City of the Sun soccer club, the owner and legendary former soccer player David Beckham, as well as the managing owners José Mas and Jorge. Also participating in the press conference on behalf of the state were Jeanette Nuñez, the state's lieutenant governor, Alex Kelly, the state's secretary of commerce, and some of the team's top stars.
The new facility, which is expected to open in 2026, will have a capacity for 25.000 people who will be able to enjoy the best sport in the world. The investment is part of a $1.000 billion package that includes the creation of a 58-acre public park for the enjoyment of residents and an entertainment area.
This grant awarded by the state government constitutes an important investment in the continued development of Miami and will also allow for the promotion of sports participation and contribute to entertainment in Miami-Dade County, DeSantis explained at the conference.
Construction began on the stadium a year ago, but an opening ceremony will likely take place at the end of this year. For now, the team that features some of the best footballers who played for Club Barcelona will be playing at home at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Broward until the end of the 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) season.
Inter Miami currently has a record of 16 wins, 5 draws and 4 losses and is positioned as leader of the MLS Eastern Conference.
