Amid Miami Mayor Francis Suarez's campaign to attract big tech companies to the city, the founder of Shutterstock wants to create the next Google in Miami.
Jon Oringer moved to Miami Beach from New York in the fall and sees potential for Miami to become the country's new tech hub.
“When we decided to base ourselves in Miami, the question was: Can we build a Google-sized company here?” said Oringer partner Lando. It’s a moonshot, no doubt, he said, and requires a Silicon Valley-type network effect to produce.
"But I think with the influx of new local talent, a company of that size could be created," they said in a report. Miami Herald.
Oringer founded Shutterstock in 2003 and managed to keep the company growing amid the rubble of the dot-com bust. The company went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2012 and is today valued at more than $2.5 billion. Oringer stepped aside as CEO last February, assuming the new title of executive chairman.
Although the two partners have not said how much they plan to invest in Miami, they already have plans to open Pareto Holdings, a group that intends to invest in start-ups.
