Beginning September 10, 2024, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will automatically extend the duration of Permanent Resident Cards (commonly known as Green Cards) by 36 months for lawful permanent residents who file Form I-90, Application for Permanent Resident Status.
From that day on, the agency began the process of automatically extending the validity of green cards or permanent residence cards.
USCIS emphasized that individuals who properly file Form I-90 may benefit from this updated extension, which replaces the previous 24-month extension.
The extension period will last for three years and will begin counting from the expiration date indicated on the green card.
USCIS has begun sending revised receipt notices to individuals with pending Form I-90 applications, which serve as verification of their status and work authorization.
The government agency hopes this extension will help people facing lengthy processing delays by providing them with verification of their permanent resident status during the period they are waiting for their updated card.
If individuals need quick proof of their status, the agency recommends scheduling a visit to a nearby USCIS office. After filing Form I-90, they may be able to obtain an Admission Documentation Stamp (ADIT).
