The USS Gravely, a U.S. guided-missile destroyer, has been sent to the Gulf of America, prompting responses from the Cuban government.
On March 15, 2025, the USS Gravely, an Arleigh Burke-class ship, departed Naval Station Yorktown in Virginia to enhance border security and combat drug trafficking in the region.
This ship is equipped with sophisticated weapons systems, such as Tomahawk missiles, and houses a group of U.S. Coast Guard personnel trained in maritime interdiction activities. Its primary objective is to assist in the capture of drug shipments seeking to enter the country via the ocean, according to a statement from the Pentagon.
In response to the proximity of this combat ship in its waters, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla expressed his rejection of the United States' military actions, stating that they constitute a risk to the stability of the region. He also emphasized that "the military presence in this area endangers the security and peace of Latin America and the Caribbean."
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the United States had given advance notice of the deployment of the USS Gravely. She also emphasized that the ship is in international waters and does not pose a danger to Mexico.
