According to a Washington Post report on Friday, House Border Czar Tom Homan indicated that the United States aims to begin transferring migrants to a detention center located in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, within the next 30 days.
The facility was initially unveiled by US President Donald Trump on Wednesday.
I think we'll start relocating people to that location in about 30 days, Homan told the publication.
Homan said he intended to visit the U.S. naval station at Guantanamo Bay soon to oversee accelerated construction at the site.
Trump said the center could hold up to 30.000 migrants, but Homan said they would likely start with just a few, The Washington Post reported.
The naval facility at Guantanamo Bay in the United States contains a migrant processing center, separate from the high-security prison designated for foreign terrorist detainees. This facility has been used periodically over the years, including to detain Haitians and Cubans intercepted at sea.
