The Cuban regime extends the import of food, medicines, and hygiene products, free of tariffs

The Havana regime announced this weekend that it will extend until January 31, 2025, the exemption of tariffs on medicines, food, and hygiene products, carried by people traveling to Cuba, as confirmed by the 45th edition (extraordinary) of the Official Gazette that published the verbatim Resolution 311 of the Ministry of Finance and Prices.

According to the island's communist government, the measure is of an "exceptional" nature, and states that in order to enjoy the benefits of the regulation, travelers must present to Customs products classified as medicines and medical supplies, food and hygiene items, in packages separate from their personal belongings.

In addition, with this measure they reported that 500 dollars is the limit of the value for non-commercial imports made by Cubans residing abroad through shipments.

Similarly, there will be no customs tax on the first $30 of the value, or its equivalent weight of 3 kg of the shipment, and only the excess of the 30% tariff rate will be applied.

In the same order, food, medicines, supplies, and hygiene products imported by natural persons through maritime, air, and postal shipments are authorized for up to 20 kg and have a limit of 200 USD.

This measure, which the Cuban government has been extending for three years, was adopted as a result of the demands of the population and the massive protests against the regime that took place on July 11, 2021 in different parts of the Caribbean nation.

"With the extension, the regime intends that it will be the emigrants who will alleviate the needs, not only financial, but also health and food needs of their relatives on the Island," said an editorial in the independent digital newspaper 14yMedio.

The misgovernment of Miguel Dรญaz-Canel and the Castro family simply do not have the means to solve the perennial socioeconomic crisis that is being experienced within the country. Meanwhile, it is the Cuban emigrants who have to continue managing so that their families can survive in the midst of the dollarization of the economy, inflation and the collapse of the national currency.
