Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has defended the idea of eliminating property taxes statewide, but explained that doing so would require a constitutional amendment.
DeSantis, who is currently serving his second term, said on X that he supports the idea of abolishing property taxes in the state.
"Property taxes are local, not state. Therefore, we would need to make a constitutional amendment (requires 60% voter approval) to eliminate them (which I would support) or even reform/reduce them," he said.
"We should put on the ballot the boldest amendment that has a chance of getting that 60%…," he added.
In his opinion, applying a tax on land or property "is the most oppressive and ineffective form of taxation," he explained.
According to a report Fox NewsEric Trump, one of the president's sons, shared DeSantis' message on X, and applauded the governor for being a supporter of this idea.
“Florida is leading the way! This is amazing!” he commented.
The governor's message on X has accumulated more than 50.000 likes since he posted it on Thursday night.
Although it would obviously entail challenges, eliminating or reducing property taxes in Florida could bring multiple benefits to the state's residents, including a reduction in the tax burden for property owners, greater purchasing power, and certainly an incentive to improve and preserve properties.
