People who hold American citizenship have the possibility of traveling to 170 countries without having to obtain a visa. Those who have a permanent residence card in the United States, popularly known as a Green Card, also enjoy this privilege, at least in the vast majority of these nations.

Although a visa is not required, it is essential to have a valid passport, without warnings or restrictions. Another important factor is that the stay in these destinations is usually limited to 30, 60 or 90 days.

For example, Mexico is one of the countries that permanent residents of the United States can enter without a visa. They are only required to provide their Green Card and a valid passport. The stay in this territory is limited to about 180 days. However, it is likely that those interested in carrying out paid or commercial activities will need to apply for a complementary visa for such purposes.

Another visa-free country for Green Card holders is Canada. To visit this nation, all you need is this document and a valid passport from your country of origin. However, travelers are advised to inquire about whether it is necessary to provide other documents, such as an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), which generally varies depending on their nationality.

Below is a list of countries that can also be accessed with the Green Card:

  • Costa Rica
  • Georgia

  • BVI
  • El Salvador
  • Dominican Republic
  • Colombia
