Rosabel, a young Cuban mother, has once again sparked controversy with a video posted on TikTok, in which she talks about the rising cost of living in Miami., especially the astronomical prices of real estate.
The young woman asked her followers if they've thought about leaving Miami for other cities like Cape Coral, in southwest Florida, to be able to own a home.
"Owning a house in Miami is looking increasingly impossible. Cape Coral has super beautiful houses, an affordable, more peaceful lifestyle," he revealed while filming part of the residential area of the city with the largest number of channels in the world.
The islander confessed she's thought about it, and although it's not something she sees herself doing anytime soon, the idea has been on her mind. Her words sparked a wave of comments online, many in agreement, others forever loyal to the city of exile, and some who have already moved and say they have no regrets.
"We did it, we bought in Cape Coral, and it was the best thing that ever happened to us. The quality of life is immense, and I don't regret it. It feels like I've always lived there," said one of Rosabel's followers.
Another netizen said she bought a house in Cape Coral almost a year ago and feels happy, and although it's not her first home in the United States, she wouldn't trade the tranquility of the new city for living anywhere else.
There were also those who pointed out the negative aspect of the city: it's not as easy to find work as it is in Miami. One cyber user even spoke from experience:
"There's no work. I have to drive 52 minutes to get to the office. If you like a super-quiet, more rural life, then you're welcome."
"I did it for Leigh four years ago. I have my four-bedroom house on half an acre, and between my husband and I, we earn more at our jobs; we've done better," said another exile.
While Miami is spectacular, and there's probably no city in the entire state that can compete when it comes to recreation and nightlife, the truth is that the cost of living is noticeably higher year after year, which definitely makes getting by in the city quite difficult for many lately, especially with the current inflation.
On the other hand, the cost of living in Cape Coral is noticeably lower than in Miami: overall, living in Cape Coral costs about 11% less than in Miami. While Cape Coral has a cost of living nearly 5% above the national average, Miami exceeds that average by 20,9%, especially in housing, which is 57% more expensive than the national average. In concrete terms, the average rent in Cape Coral is around $1 per month, compared to $864 per month in the so-called capital of exile. Furthermore, in Miami, a higher percentage of households spend more than half of their income on rent (2%), while Cape Coral falls slightly below that figure (174%).
In short, living in Cape Coral means paying less for housing, food, and utilities, making it a more economical option compared to Miami.
