According to the U.S. Department of Justice, a Florida resident originally from Cuba has received a prison sentence of more than five years for committing more than $7.6 million in health care fraud and aggravated identity theft.
U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Barber has sentenced Fernando Espinosa Leรณn, 60, to nearly six years in federal prison for committing Medicare fraud through his company, Global Medical Supply Inc.
According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), the presiding judge of the Middle District of Florida ordered Espinosa to forfeit $4,013,148.76, which he acquired through illegal activities.
The Cuban admitted to the charges against him on December 6, 2024.
Court records indicate that Espinosa executed a scheme to defraud Medicare by illegally obtaining personal identification details from both the health insurance program's beneficiaries and various healthcare providers.
The prosecution found that the individual deceitfully submitted invoices to Medicare for durable medical supplies that he claimed had been ordered and provided.
Espinosa hired a third-party billing service and submitted false claims totaling more than $7.6 million between June and September 2020. As a result, he obtained more than $4 million in illicit Medicare funds, which were funneled into a bank account supervised and managed by Espinosa.
The investigation was overseen by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, along with the Office of the Inspector General and the U.S. Marshals Service.
