The ceremony was held at the White House alongside other great figures of culture in the United States. Roberto González Echevarría is known for Myth and Archive: a Theory of Latin American Narrative and The Pride of Havana: a History of Cuban Baseball (1999). Roberto González Echevarría was born in Sagua la Grande Villa Clara and emigrated from Cuba to the United States with his parents in 1959.
