China is willing to work peacefully with the United States to eliminate North Korea's nuclear weapons program, President Xi Junping told his counterpart Trump in a phone call, AFP reported.
The conversation was the result of a tweet in which the American president urged China to take action on the matter before his government did, considering it a threat.
"China insists on achieving denuclearization of the peninsula, insists on maintaining peace and stability on the peninsula and is in favor of resolving the issue through peaceful means," Xi said, according to the foreign ministry.
The mediation is taking place amid heightened tensions with the dispatch of a US aircraft carrier to the area and the deployment of thousands of US and South Korean troops and weapons for manoeuvres.
