โ€œChico & Ritaโ€ at the Miami International Film Festival

Chico and Rita in Miami"Chico & Rita" is a film by the Spanish director Fernando Trueba that tells the love story of Chico, a poor pianist, and Rita, a singer whom he meets by chance one night in 1948 at the Tropicana cabaret in Havana, Cuba. The film that will open the Miami International Film Festival on Friday, March 4, won a Goya award in Spain for best animated film and assured that it is not at all a political film although it has some politics in its plot. The director expressed his joy at presenting the film in Miami due to the large number of Hispanics and especially Cubans who are a natural audience for this film. The film jumps from Havana to other cities such as New York, Paris, Hollywood and Las Vegas, which makes it a very Cuban film but at the same time very American, according to its director Fernando Trueba. The Spanish director, who made his presentation today in Miami, said about Cuba: โ€œAnyone who walks through this city today will feel infinite sadness for the abandonment and deterioration of its buildings, for those beautiful houses falling to pieces.โ€ He also said that he does not sympathize with or ever support the dictatorship in Cuba or any dictatorship in the world. The Miami International Film Festival is a great party for those who like cinema and for Cubans it is even greater when there are exhibitions of Cuban cinema, that is why I will be one of the first to go see โ€œChico & Rita.โ€ The Miami International Film Festival will take place from March 4 to 13, 2011 in Miami.
