High surf warning and flood watch for Miami-Dade and Broward coasts

Miami-Dade County coast on alert for high risk of rip currents, warning that will extend until Sunday at night, he reported Local 10 News.

The area is also under a high surf advisory for Saturday, with large breaking waves of 6 to 9 feet expected through tomorrow night.


Meteorologists have said inexperienced swimmers should stay out of the water as the force of the waves can throw even those who are good at swimming in the open sea far from shore.

Tropical Depression Four was expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Debby and later (north of the Florida Keys in the warmth of the Gulf of Mexico) into Hurricane Debby.

In Miami Beach, the city has opened free parking for residents to protect their cars from flooding. There has also been free sandbag distribution from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays, at 2100 Collins Ave.

City officials have been promoting the flood awareness campaign by warning that “the low elevation, near sea level” can “cause drainage problems and flooding due to heavy rains, high tides and storm surge.”

Flood warnings are in effect for inland and metropolitan Miami-Dade County, inland and metropolitan Broward County, and a high surf advisory, rip current advisory, and flood watch are in effect for coastal Broward.
