A state-of-the-art cargo hub, described as a groundbreaking venture for the hemisphere โ โthe first of its kind in the hemisphereโ โ will be established at Miami International Airport.
The airport's total capacity will be increased by at least 50%, equivalent to a total of 4,5 million tons, with the addition of four floors to the facility. This expansion, financed with an investment of 400 million dollars, will significantly increase the airport's capacities.
Mayor Daniella Levine Cava expressed her excitement about the new state-of-the-art air cargo facility, believing it will propel MIA to the forefront of the global cargo industry due to sustained growth since 2020.
โThe sky is the limit for MIA to lead the global air cargo industry after consecutive years of unprecedented growth since 2020,โ he said.
Vertically Integrated Cargo Community (VICC) will be the name of the new facility, which sits on a sprawling 11-acre site and will be known for its 800,000 square foot area dedicated to an integrated cargo community.
The project is scheduled to be completed by 2029, resulting in the creation of 8.500 temporary positions over the course of five years. These roles will collectively generate $500 million in wages.
The implementation of VICC is expected to increase the airportโs cargo capacity by a minimum of 50%, leading to the creation of 2.500 new long-term employment opportunities. This increase in jobs is expected to generate $512 million in revenue and profits for the countyโs Aviation Department over the course of the next four decades.
Additionally, a minimum of 60% of the companies involved in the design and construction of the project will be located within the county, supporting registered local small businesses.
According to Mayor Levine Cava, this great news will have a positive impact on the community and the economy:
โMIA is our largest economic engine, generating thousands of jobs for our residents and significant revenue for many of our leading industries, from tourism to small businesses,โ he said.
